MONDAY AM BONUS: Our old friend Mark Pike has put together an “Amazing” version of this clip that, for once, warrants this description:
I snapped this Polaroid circa 2005. The guy was singing a song about Star Trek to entice people to bid on the painting of Uhura. He wanted $100. A totally logical business strategy.
Having just seen the new Star Trek film, I wish I would’ve bought that painting.
Is it possible I am related to Captain Christopher Pike? Probably not, considering he is a fictional character from the future. But, what if I named a son Christopher? Nah, that’s just what J.J. Abrams would expect me to do. I’m not your deus ex machina, J.J.
“ Anderson told me that he and his screenwriting collaborator, Owen Wilson, conceived Rushmore hero Max Fischer as Charlie Brown plus Snoopy. ”

Wes Anderson and his pantheon of heroes (Schulz, Welles, Truffaut). First in a five part series.
Well-written and well-researched retrospective of Wes Anderson’s work. There’s a video link if you’ve got the time.
True story- when I was in high school, my mom saw a classified advertisement in the USA Today looking for somebody to play the role of Max Fischer in Rushmore. We decided to put together an application, despite my lack of theatrical experience, because it sounded fun. I think we ended up getting in an argument about whether I needed a haircut before I sent in a headshot with my application. We never sent in the application. I got a haircut.
I loved this movie. Check the trailer.
Basically, it’s about two mismatched kids who become friends and make a homemade version of Rambo on a 1980s VHS recorder. It’s what you wanted “Be Kind Rewind” to achieve mixed with the euro-quirkiness you loved about “Amelie”.

In honor of the Academy Awards, here’s a short snippet of a review I wrote for the fine folks at Cdigix on the movie I saw this weekend… it was really good. You should see it.
The film is sprinkled with these moments of Chappelle living his life and creating comedy out of the ethers mixed in with concert footage. Carrying around a bullhorn, it’s clear to see that the world is Chappelle’s stage and for the moment, we’re hanging on to every word. At one point, as Chappelle is picking out furniture at a Salvation Army thrift store to place on the roof of the Block Party film shoot, he spots a piano and decides to tickle the ivories. He tinkers around with “Round Midnight” as Ahmir ?uestlove Thompson (drummer for the Roots) watches on and giggles about Chappelle’s timing. Chappelle then waxes philosophical about comedians and musicians wishing they had each other’s jobs (eg: Jamie Foxx) and talks about Thelonious Monk always being “off time, yet perfectly on time.” It’s a very self-aware moment from Chappelle and very revealing of his complex character.
Here’s a picture of me hanging out with ?uestlove from the Roots during a concert I helped put on at Duke in 2002. I’m basically trying to be cool by the transitive property.

I love the haiku. 5-7-5. So simple.
I probably spent more time trying to write this than any of my longer posts, so please don’t tell me it’s a cop-out.
